the good side

One thing I love (and sometimes hate) about my job are the people I get to work with. Today reminded me of why I wanted to be a cosmetologist in the first place. I have been cutting Effies' hair for about a year now. She was one of my first clients (isn't it crazy that I have been here for over a year now?).  Effie is one of the sweetest ladies I have yet to meet. She some brain trauma before she started coming to me and almost lost her life. She never complains and has so much love for life. She reminds me to slow down and appreciate everything I have been given because everyday is a gift.

apparently unprofessional

I was recently left the nastiest messages (yes more then one) from a girl who has been coming to me for a while now and has always been satisfied. This girl came in and wanted to go platinum blonde. I told her the risks and had the owner of the salon come and tell her the risks and we came up with a plan together that would be the cheapest and fastest way to go blonde. She cut the service short and left without a toner so her hair had a slight yellow tint to it, which often happens when going blonde. I told her to come back in and we would put the toner on to lift any yellow left. She paid...left a tip...and walked out with out a complaint. The next day there were messages from 7 that morning. I will not go into details because the things she said were very mean, demanding free service and product while telling me how awful and unprofessional I was. I called her and told her to come in the next day to have the toner and then my services would be done. Later that day my salon owner heard the messages and called her to tell her she was no longer welcome in the salon. The funny thing is that a few days later she posted pictures on facebook of her fabulous new haircolor...the one that was "unprofessional." It is frustrating and disheartening to me that people will say and do what ever they can to rip someone off. At times I would like to quit and work some place else, especially when something like this happens. I am lucky that someone was watching out for me and had my back.

shellac

View Photo0858.jpg in slide show

If you have not tried out the new "shellacing," you definitely are missing out and need to get on board! It is a nail polish that last for up to two weeks. When I said this color lasts for up to two weeks, I'm not joking.  It is a mix between gel and polish so it isn't as damaging as artificial nails. There are many different brands (shellac, gellac, gel color, and more). My favorite is Gel Color by OPI. Seriously, go make an appointment!

contacts and why you need them

one of my clients (a high school girl) has found the "love of her life," her boyfriend of 3 months.  Yes it is true love. This lovely young lady has always worn glasses. Recently she came in with her mother and they were discussing getting contacts. I was pulled into the conversation since I have done both. I ask my client the reasons she wanted contacts. This is what she said...no joke..."to be honest I can't really make out very well with glasses on...."

meany heads

So far I have only encountered a couple "meany heads" and this week I had a client that took the gold. A few weeks back I ran a Special, manicure/pedicure for $40. I had one extremely extravagant and picky lady come in. At one point she even took the nail file from me and said she wanted to do it herself because no one every did it right. She decided by the end of her service that she also wanted to do nails. I explained to her that I was still practicing and they weren't "guaranteed" so to speak. I also explained that because I was practicing I would only charge a fraction of the price and she gladly agreed.  A week later she called complaining that they hadn't stayed on. I agreed to redo the ones that had fallen off free of charge. She came to the salon and tried to get free products from the owner in place of the service which we wouldn't except. I didn't hear from her for about another week. I got a call on the phone and she said she didnt want the nails done she just wanted her money back. I tried to explain what I had told her before and that I only charged her for the product I used. She became quite upset so I agreed to refund the 10$ I had charged. Apparently she was trying to get the full 50$ I had charged for the mani/pedi and began telling me she hated how I had done them and I filed them wrong and it was like a Two year old had done them (If u remember from earlier she had filed her own). I told her again I would gladly refund the money spent on the nails, but not the full services I had provided. She then said she was never coming back and hung up. MEANY HEAD!

You're BEAUTIFUL

Today I had quite a few kids cut. Five in a row to be exact. I love to cut childrens hair (when they hold still). They say the funniest things, even when they are wiggling. I had one little girl and four boys. The girl up to me and said, "Whoa! You are Beautiful..." after I had finished her haircut and style she looked in the mirror and exclaimed, "Wow! Im beautiful now too!" The next cut was a cute little boy with a batman tshirt. He ran up saying, "I am BATMAN!" I asked him if I was in trouble would he save me. He thought for a second and answered with a simple no. I asked him why and wasn't that what batman was supposed to do. He looked at me and said, "You silly girl! I'm not the REAL batman!" oh how I love kids.
